Fameye has revealed that there was no elaborate story or particular experience behind his hit song “Gen Z”, despite the attention and different interpretations the record has attracted.

The Ghanaian musician said the idea came largely from people he already interacts with, particularly his Gen Z friends and the way they live, behave and express themselves.

Speaking in an interview on YFM, Fameye explained that he simply observed the generation around him and translated what he saw into music.

“I have Gen Z friends, I know how the Gen Zs move is, and I know how their character is like, so I just tapped in,” he said.

The singer’s explanation puts the song in a much simpler context than some listeners may have imagined. Rather than being built around a particular incident, message or personal experience, Fameye said he was inspired by his familiarity with the generation and its lifestyle.

He also admitted that he had struggled to give a consistent explanation for the song’s inspiration during previous media appearances. According to him, there was no specific motivation that he could point to, making it difficult to provide a detailed backstory without saying something different each time he was asked.

“I said on TV that I don’t really have any special motivation for this song, so I might end up saying different things on any platform I get on, but I think the honest thing is my Gen Z friends,” he stated.

While the concept may have started with observation, the sound of “Gen Z” was shaped through collaboration and experimentation. Fameye singled out producer Cooks, whom he described as a member of Gen Z, for his contribution to the record.

Having a producer who belongs to the same generation that inspired the song also gave the creative process another layer. Cooks was able to help translate Fameye’s idea into a sound that connected with the character of the record.

The song’s final production was further influenced by Fameye’s experience in South Africa.

He travelled to the country with his DJ and encountered an environment where Amapiano was deeply embedded in the local music and social scene. That experience prompted his DJ to suggest introducing some of the genre’s elements into the record.

“We travelled to South Africa. You know how South Africans love Amapiano, and they chill a lot. So I went there with my DJ, and he told me I should call Cooks and tell him to add some Amapiano touch so that it can sound a little bit like Amapiano, not just the Afro sound,” Fameye further stated.
