Former Black Stars and Kotoko midfielder Isaac Otoo has reflected on the transformative influence of Black Stars legend John Essien on his career, highlighting the enduring legacy of his mentorship.
According to Otoo, Essien provided pivotal guidance that helped shape his illustrious career. The midfielder had a successful career and was part of the Asante Kotoko team that won the Ghana Premier League in 1991, demonstrating his talent and dedication.
In an interview with Dan Kwaku Yeboah TV, the veteran midfielder revealed how his admiration for Essien led to a close relationship with the legend, while acknowledging how Essien’s advice shaped his career.
“Although I played for Kotoko, I also liked Hasaacas because I admired him. Anytime they came to Kumasi, I would take his clothes to wash. So, I just want to say thank you to him,” he said.
Otoo also praised the 1982 AFCON winner for encouraging him to build his physical fitness, a key factor in his eventual selection to the national team.
“He advised me that Ghana has lots of talent, so if I want to stand out, I have to do my personal training aside what we have at the club. He told me to do an extra thirty minutes of training if I want to get into the national team,” he added.
