In situations where some artistes, including DopeNation, have argued that musicians can succeed without signing to a record label, Ghanaian musician Kyei Nwom has taken a different stance, insisting that artistes cannot make it in the industry without support from a record label.
Speaking on TV3’s Showbiz 360, the young artiste argued that it is almost impossible for an upcoming musician to achieve success independently.
Record labels can help, but they are not for everyone – DopeNation
He explained that record labels provide structures that individual artistes cannot build on their own and that there is nothing wrong if a label invests in an artiste and also earns from their talent.
“When DopeNation mentioned that you can do your song on your own, you no fit do am on your own, you can’t. You need a label. The evidence is going to be so clear when you are on a record label and when you are not on a record label. If someone also gets a share from your talent, there’s nothing wrong with it than trying to do everything by yourself,” he said.

Kyei Nwom pointed out that one of the main ways labels support artistes is through their relationships with DJs. He disclosed that many record labels in Ghana have DJs on their payroll, which guarantees heavy promotion whenever a song is released.
“I realise that most record labels in Ghana, have DJs on payroll. They don’t pay them as much but they don’t wait to release a song before they sort them out. When a song drops from an artiste from their label, like when a Kuami Eugene song drops, they have about 35-35 in Accra, Kumasi about 20, Takoradi, Volta and you are sorting all these people out just to make sure that when the song comes out, they all go in their numbers and play for you.
“If you leave this record label, how are you going to sort all these people out? And it’s just a simple message. Even if you are a big artiste, you were once on a record label and you left, you are probably going to find a team of six people, they can’t do the work,” he explained.
