Police have carried out a controlled explosion after a suspicious package was identified at Euston station in London.

The station was evacuated while police investigated the reports and cordons were put in place.

The Metropolitan Police said in a tweet: ‘We’re aware of reports online about an incident in the vicinity of Euston Station.

‘Police cordons are in place as a precaution while officers investigate a suspect package.’

In an update 20 minutes later, the force said: ‘A controlled explosion has been carried out by specialist officers and the police cordons have now been lifted. Thank you for your patience.’

It comes after the South Terminal at Gatwick airport was evacuated yesterday, leaving thousands stranded, after a ‘suspicious package’ was discovered in a passenger’s luggage.

Pictures posted on social media appeared to show emergency vehicles outside the London station, with one person writing: ‘Just heard a massive explosion near Euston Road. Now the streets are flooded with sirens.’

Another added: ‘Station at Euston been evacuated and cordens all over the place. Plenty of police and incident support teams. Not quite sure what’s going on.’

Yesterday airport bosses at Gatwick began probing a piece of baggage shortly after 8am before ordering passengers to leave.

Eyewitnesses said even passengers who were going through security were being evacuated from the airport, near Crawley in West Sussex.

Two people who were detained in connection with the incident while enquiries were ongoing have subsequently been allowed to continue their journeys.

Similarly yesterday a ‘controlled explosion’ was carried out by police outside the US embassy in London after a suspicious ‘hoax device’ sparked panic.

Witnesses said roads around the embassy were closed to traffic and armed police officers and the fire service were at the scene in Nine Elms.

A ‘loud bang’ was reported in the area shortly after a cordon was put into place.

The Met confirmed this was a ‘controlled explosion’ as part of their investigation.

A statement from the embassy, posted on X, read: ‘Local authorities are investigating a suspicious package outside the U.S. Embassy in London.

‘Met Police are present and have closed Ponton Road out of an abundance of caution. We will provide further updates when available.’

The force said later: ‘Initial indications are that the item was a hoax device. An investigation will now follow. Some cordons will remain in place for the time being but the majority of the police response will now be stood down.’
