Former Asante Kotoko defender Ernest Appau has boldly claimed that the club’s 1982 squad is the greatest team in the history of Ghanaian club football.

Reflecting on the team’s talent, cohesion, and dominance during that era, Appau believes no other Ghanaian club side has matched the quality and impact of the legendary Asante Kotoko 1982 team.

In an interview with Kessben TV, Appau, who was an integral part of the squad, highlighted its exceptional strength and balance.

Although he acknowledged the lack of unity among the players, he praised the group’s unique combination of skill, strategy, and standout individual talent, which, in his view, set them apart.

“If we’re being honest, the 1982 Kotoko team was the greatest club side Ghana has ever seen,” he stated passionately. “We had everything, talent, experience, and drive, but we lacked unity, and that was our downfall.”

Appau also compared the revered 1982 squad to the 1983 Asante Kotoko team. While the latter may not have boasted the same level of star power, they accomplished what the 1982 side could not by clinching the CAF Champions League title.

“The 1983 team may not have had the star power of 1982, but they had something we didn’t, which was unity. They were one family, and that’s what made the difference,” he added.

Despite their remarkable quality, the 1982 Asante Kotoko team fell short of winning the African Champions League due to internal conflicts and a lack of cohesion among the players.
