The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has shut down a Chinese-owned warehouse, FEI FUCAI, at Anwia Nkwantah in the Ashanti Region for allegedly storing and fabricating Chanfan machines and other equipment used in illegal mining activities.

The move follows the government’s recent declaration banning the importation, use, and fabrication of equipment linked to the destruction of water bodies and farmlands through illegal mining, otherwise known as galamsey.

Chanfang is just a brand name – GNASSM to EPA

In an interview with Joy News on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, the Chief Executive Officer of the EPA, Professor Nana Ama Browne Klutse, who led the operation, said the move forms part of efforts to curb pollution in Ghana’s rivers and enforce the government’s ban on river mining.

Professor Klutse explained that some operators disguise their activities under the guise of selling agricultural equipment.

“They hide under the pretense that their machines are also used for agricultural purposes. But we clearly know that, especially in this area, they are used for mining in our water bodies,” she stressed.

The EPA has banned the fabrication, importation, sale, and use of Chanfan machines across Ghana, citing their devastating impact on the country’s rivers and ecosystems.
