Engineer George Kofi Arthur, former three-term Member of Parliament for Amenfi Central and seasoned party stalwart, has emerged as a leading contender for the position of Western Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), positioning himself as a unifying figure with a proven track record in governance, infrastructure development, and grassroots mobilization.
Born on February 24, 1969, in Wassa Agona Amenfi, Arthur’s deep roots in the Western Region and decades of public service have earned him widespread respect among party functionaries and constituents alike. His potential bid for the regional chairmanship comes at a pivotal moment for the NDC, as the party intensifies efforts to reorganize and consolidate strength ahead of the 2024 general elections.
Arthur’s parliamentary tenure from 2005 to 2017 marked him as one of the most industrious legislators in the Western Region. Representing Amenfi Central across three consecutive terms, he gained national recognition for his disciplined legislative approach, committee leadership, and commitment to national development policy. He notably chaired the influential Parliamentary Committee on Defence and Interior and served as Deputy Ranking Member of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), where his forensic oversight of public expenditures earned plaudits for transparency and accountability.
“Hon. Arthur is not a politician by accident,” said political analyst Dr. Esi Owusu-Banahene of the University of Cape Coast. “His time in the House was defined by consistency, deep policy engagement, and a technocratic mindset. These qualities are exactly what our party needs at the regional level right now.”
Arthur’s professional background further strengthens his credentials. A trained engineer with a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering Technology (Electronics and Automotive) from the University of Education, Winneba, he also holds a Diploma in Education with Distinction in Educational Technology and a Master’s in Governance and Leadership from the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA). This multidisciplinary expertise has shaped his pragmatic, results-oriented approach to leadership.
Before entering politics, Arthur worked as a teacher, electronics specialist, and construction professional. He contributed to major infrastructure projects with firms including Toyota Ghana, Anyasco Electronics, and Afrangua Construction Limited, gaining firsthand insight into the developmental challenges confronting the Western and Western North Regions—particularly in road networks, youth employment, and industrial capacity.
His party activism predates his parliamentary career. Arthur served as General Secretary of the Mpohor Constituency NDC, played a key role in the party’s National Communications Team, and held leadership positions during his time as a student and young professional. This extensive involvement at both grassroots and national levels has solidified his standing within the party’s internal architecture.
Supporters believe his experience managing complex parliamentary committees—spanning Roads and Transport, Agriculture, Housing, Employment, and Social Welfare—demonstrates his ability to navigate diverse issues and coordinate multi-stakeholder efforts, a critical skill for leading the regional executive.
“George Kofi Arthur knows every constituency in this region like the back of his hand,” said Madam Abena Mensah, a longtime NDC organizer in Tarkwa. “He’s not just a former MP—he’s a builder. A teacher. An engineer. He’s someone who has delivered on the ground and understands the mechanics of governance.”
As the NDC gears up for internal elections, the race for Western Regional Chairman is expected to be keenly contested. However, Arthur’s combination of legislative experience, administrative acumen, and professional background in engineering and development is setting him apart as a candidate of competence and continuity.
Party insiders suggest his campaign could focus on strengthening internal party unity, revitalizing constituency executives, and designing region-specific development strategies that align national party objectives with local priorities.
With the 2024 elections looming, the NDC’s ability to present credible, capable leadership in key regions like the Western will be critical. In Engineer George Kofi Arthur, the party may have found a figure whose resume reflects substance over slogans—a leader whose life in service, both technical and political, embodies the party’s renewed call for development-driven governance.
A formal announcement on his candidacy is expected in the coming weeks as the party’s electoral college preparations get underway.
