Davis Ansah Opoku, MP for Mpraeso Constituency in the Eastern Region, has called for a constitutional amendment to allow the election of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) to help curb the rising attrition in the Legislature.

Speaking in parliament, Opoku argued that the current system burdens MPs with development responsibilities, undermining their primary role as lawmakers.

“MPs are legislators, not development agents. But due to the inability to elect MMDCEs, constituents demand developmental projects from MPs, leading to unmet expectations and voter dissatisfaction,” he explained.

Mr. Opoku emphasized that electing MMDCEs would empower local governments to handle development, enabling MPs to focus on lawmaking and oversight.

He also urged Parliament to prioritize civic education to clarify MPs’ roles to constituents.

“Reforming local governance will improve service delivery and preserve the integrity of Parliament,” he added, calling for nationwide consultations on the proposed amendment.
