Egypt and Iran's game at the World Cup could involve LGBTQ+ activities Egypt and Iran’s game at the World Cup could involve LGBTQ+ activities

Iran and Egypt’s football federations have asked FIFA to change their match schedule to avoid clashing with the LGBTQ+ Pride celebrations in the United States during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Egypt will face Iran on June 27, 2026, in Seattle, USA, in a group-stage match during the Mundial. However, the match is scheduled to coincide with the LGBTQ+ Pride celebration, which may include related activities.

The Egypt Football Association (EFA) petitioned FIFA to ensure that the match is not associated with the celebration, stating that it does not align with their cultural and religious values.

Both countries strongly oppose LGBTQ+ activities and impose severe penalties on individuals found engaging in them.

In its letter to FIFA’s secretary general, Mattias Grafstrom, the EFA said it categorically rejects any activities promoting LGBTQ during the match, warning that such events could provoke cultural and religious sensitivities among fans.

“These activities directly conflict with the cultural, religious, and social values of the region, particularly in Arab and Islamic societies. While FIFA is committed to ensuring a respectful environment that welcomes all fans, it is essential to avoid activities that could spark tension or misunderstanding between supporters from Egypt and Iran.

“We call on FIFA to guarantee that the match takes place in an atmosphere focused solely on sport and free from displays that contradict the beliefs of the participating nations,” the EFA said.

However, reports indicate that FIFA does not control the Pride Match, as it is organized by local authorities in Seattle.

FIFA is yet to respond to the request and clarify whether the match will involve any LGBTQ+ activities.
