Efforts are ongoing to restore smooth traffic flow and ensure public safety on the Suhum-Nsawam Highway following a fatal accident involving a fuel tanker, the Ghana Police Service has announced.
In a statement dated February 14, 2026, and signed by DSP David Fianko-Okyere of the Eastern South Regional Public Affairs Unit, the Police said the incident occurred at Ntoaso on the Accra-Suhum dual carriageway.
According to the release, the tanker, which was transporting petrol from Tema to Kumasi, crashed upon reaching a section of the road at Ntoaso. Initial investigations indicate that the driver lost control of the vehicle, resulting in a major explosion.

The blast caused fuel to spill onto vehicles traveling behind the tanker, triggering a rapidly spreading fire.
“Preliminary investigation indicates that the driver lost control of the vehicle, leading to the bulk blasting and the fuel splashing on vehicles behind it,” the statement read.
The explosion caused extensive destruction at the scene. In total, six vehicles and four motorcycles were completely burnt.
Three bodies were retrieved from the wreckage, including two unidentified male victims found at the scene and another body discovered inside one of the charred vehicles.
Four additional victims sustained varying degrees of injuries and were rushed to nearby health facilities for treatment.
Firefighters from the Ghana National Fire Service stations in Suhum and Nsawam were dispatched to contain and extinguish the flames.
The Police also indicated that officers are visiting hospitals in the area to assist with identifying the deceased and the injured.
Authorities are working to clear the burnt vehicles from the highway to ease traffic congestion and restore normal movement along the busy stretch.
Motorists using the Suhum-Nsawam route have been advised to drive cautiously, reduce speed, and strictly follow instructions from officers on the ground to prevent further incidents.
