Vice President of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia Vice President of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia

Vice President of Ghana, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has stated that government has been unsuccessful in convincing PayPal to add Ghana to the list of countries their payment system works in.

Regardless of the advancement in talks, the Vice President indicated that they have blacklisted Ghana.

Bawumia made this known when he met people in the creative economy on Wednesday October 16, 2024.

He, however, revealed that government is working to get an alternative to PayPal in order for creatives to access their monies they make from the various online platforms.

“In terms of dealing with international commerce, PayPal for example we don’t have access to PayPal. Many content creators I have heard have even got monies locked up in PayPal. When you use PayPal, your money actually sits outside Ghana, it doesn’t sit inside.

“Since around 2018, I’ve been engaging with Paypal at the very highest to say look Ghana we are doing so many things but we seem to be blacklisted.”

Dr. Bawumia added: “They’ve blacklisted us in that sense but I was teasing that how can you have Nigeria have PayPal and we don’t have PayPal? So we had a good laugh over it and all of that. But in all seriousness we’ve been trying to get Ghana that blacklist thing taken off and we’ve not been able to be successful. We’ve gone far but not quite there,” he said.

The Vice President indicated that the unsuccessful nature of their meetings with PayPal, the government and their stakeholders are looking at getting an altrernative
