Media personality and entertainment pundit Nana Romeo has urged the Minister of Communications and Digitalisation, Sam George, to shift his focus from DSTV pricing to more pressing national issues.

Speaking on his show on September 8, 2025, Nana Romeo argued that DSTV is a luxury service and not a basic necessity.

He recalled how President John Dramani Mahama had stated that government would stop paying for DSTV subscriptions in its offices, yet Multichoice, operators of DSTV, did not protest.

“DSTV is not a necessity. It is a luxury good. Even when the NDC came to power. The president stopped the payment of DSTV in government offices. Multichoice never came to complain about it. They themselves know that DSTV is not needed by everyone; anyone who can afford it can buy it,” he said.

He added that shutting down DSTV would only disadvantage Ghanaians, as the company has even supported Ghana’s creative space and that sports lovers rely heavily on DSTV, as many international matches, including Ghana’s World Cup qualifiers, are exclusively broadcast on the platform.

DStv services still operational despite Sam George’s shutdown threat

“Some movie producers have shared how Multichoice is even helping the movie industry by producing some movies and TV shows. Aside from that, those into sports can only watch through DSTV, even the World Cup qualifiers between Chad and Ghana; no Ghanaian TV station had the rights to it, only DSTV. So shutting it down will be a huge discredit to them,” he said.

He urged the minister to seek common ground with the service provider instead of threats.

On the issue of pricing, Nana Romeo maintained that price differences exist everywhere, citing bottled water as an example.

“Speaking of overpricing, a single product like a bottle of water can be sold at different prices at different places. We need a general pricing mechanism. These are the things to be fighting for. Not DSTV.

He also reminded Sam George of his strong advocacy against LGBTQ+ before assuming office, stressing that such issues deserve more attention than targeting DSTV.

“Before you came into power, you focused on the issue of LGBTQ. Ever since you came to office, you have been silent on it. These are things to be fighting for, not DSTV,” he said.
