Martin Kpebu (L) was slammed by Dr Zaato (R) for claiming that former President Akufo-Addo is corrup

Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has clashed with a University of Ghana political science senior lecturer, Dr Joshua Jebuntie Zaato, on live TV, regarding a subject on corruption.

The heated argument was on TV3’s The Key Points on January 24, 2026, and was prompted by Kpebu claiming that former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was corrupt.

The lawyer repeated his criticism of the Akufo-Addo government, tagging the former president as corrupt, while touting the first-year performance of the John Dramani Mahama government.

“By the record, if you compare Akufo-Addo and JM head-to-head, JM is above him in terms of the economy, press freedom, corruption perception, democracy, etc. Common sense will teach you to go and bring someone who is unblemished.

“(Sic) is as corrupt as Akufo-Addo,” Kpebu could be heard saying before Dr Zaato interjected.

The political science senior lecturer, in response, stated that he would not allow the former president to be accused of corruption without any proof.

“Come on, Martin. You cannot sit and impugn a former president like that. Do you have evidence that he is corrupt? Why do you sit down and say that your former president is corrupt? Do you have any evidence to support that?” he fumed.

But Kpebu insisted that it is his opinion that Akufo-Addo is corrupt, citing the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) as his basis.

Dr Zaato then indicated that the CPI is just about perception and cannot be used as evidence of corruption.
