Dr Adam Bona, a security expert, has urged the Mahama administration to investigate and prosecute the police officer who assaulted DSP Nanka Bruce at the Jubilee House in January 2017 under Akufo-Addo’s presidency.
The incident featured ASP Jalil Bawa, who viciously attacked DSP Nanka Bruce, the Director in Charge of VVIP at the Flagstaff House. A security video of the assault went viral on social media, causing widespread indignation.
Although the topic was brought in Parliament by Ras Mubarak, the then-Kumbungu MP, the case seemed to have vanished from public view as the Attorney General’s staff showed little interest in prosecuting.
“Mr Speaker, I am aware of a report made by DSP Nanka Bruce, Director in Charge of the VVIP at the Flagstaff House, on January 9, 2017, in which he reported an assault on him by an ex-policeman named Jalil [Bawa] and one Abu. The case is currently being investigated by the Police CID, and attempts are being made to apprehend the suspects,” Ras Mubarak declared in Parliament at the time.
Dr Bona, speaking on Metro TV on Monday, January 6, 2024, criticized the state’s unwillingness to punish ASP Jalil, claiming that it has emboldened him to act without consequence.
“I expect the Mahama administration to act with the hoodlums who seized over and assaulted others at the Jubilee House. Someone like ASP Jalil approached a police officer named DSP Nanka Bruce at the Jubilee House and beat him up like an animal, then went to his home and beat him up, and this happened under the purported human rights activist president, and no one punished this ASP, who is still in uniform,” Dr Bona stated.
At the time of the occurrence, ASP Jalil Bawa had been fired from the Ghana Police Service. He went on to become a key member of the NPP’s private security force, known as the Invisible Forces.
Following the NPP’s accession of power, the Akufo-Addo administration returned ASP Jalil into the police force and gave him a special recommendation to attend the police academy and become an officer.
