Former Vice President Dr Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia has opined that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) subjected the late Member of Parliament for Akwatia, Ernest Kumi, to sleeplessness after the 2024 general elections.
According to the presidential hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), the ruling party’s decision to contest the Akwatia parliamentary results in court put unbearable pressure on the late legislature.
He has, in view of his assertion, linked the death of Ernest Kumi, who walked to parliament on the ticket of the NPP, directly to the NDC, alleging that the court case, coupled with alleged intimidation, raised his pressure.
Dr Mahamudu Bawumia levelled the allegations while speaking to chiefs at Akyem Wenchi ahead of the Akwatia by-election scheduled for Tuesday, September 2, 2025.
He stated that though the late MP “persevered after an earlier defeat, he came back in 2024, and by the grace of God, he won this time,” but the spirited legal battle mounted by the NDC against him allegedly took a toll on his life.
“When he won, the NDC rejected the verdict and went to court. He became frustrated, which raised his blood pressure. But the court affirmed that he was the elected MP. Twenty-six days after the final verdict, he died.”
Dr Bawumia appealed to voters in the constituency to remember the sacrifices the late MP made and the good fight he fought on their behalf, and to vote massively for Solomon Asumadu, the NPP candidate.
Speaker Bagbin discloses cause of Akwatia MP Ernest Kumi’s death
Meanwhile, the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin, recently confirmed that the late MP for Akwatia, Ernest Yaw Kumi, died of heart failure.
The First Deputy Speaker, Bernard Ahiafor, announced on behalf of the speaker before the House went on recess.
The untimely demise of the 40-year-old legislator, who passed away on July 7, 2025, after a short illness, has necessitated the by-election in the Akwatia constituency.
The Tuesday, September 2, 2025, by-election in Akwatia, which will be supervised by the Electoral Commission as required by law, will be a keen contest between the ruling NDC and the opposition NPP.
While lawyer Bernard Bediako Baidoo will represent the NDC, the NPP will be represented by Solomon Kwame Asumadu.
