Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has offered to increase security at Accra’s Kantamanto Market by personally sponsoring the installation of CCTV cameras. This vow follows a horrific fire that decimated the market on January 2, 2025, displacing many vendors and left them trying to rebuild their companies.

During a visit to the site, Dr. Bawumia expressed deep sympathy for the devastated shopkeepers, calling the destruction a tremendous setback. He praised the traders for their tenacity and proactive attempts to begin rehabilitation despite the obstacles.

To aid in the recovery process, the Vice President pledged a personal payment of GH¢200,000 to restore the market. He also emphasized the necessity for stronger security measures to protect the market from similar disasters. “As part of the security, I’d like to add CCTV cameras in Kantamanto. “I’ll bring them myself so we can install them,” he promised the traders. The announcement has been hailed by Kantamanto traders, who saw it as a much-needed intervention at this critical time. They were grateful for Dr. Bawumia’s prompt responsiveness and commitment to their recuperation.

The fire, which damaged multiple stalls and items worth millions of cedis, sparked debate about the safety and vulnerability of Ghana’s key commerce areas. While the cause of the Kantamanto fire is still being investigated, it has highlighted the need for increased security and preventive measures in marketplaces around the country.

Dr. Bawumia’s vow to install CCTV is consistent with larger requests for greater surveillance and fire prevention techniques in markets to preserve traders’ capital and livelihoods. His cash donation, combined with the promise of technology support, is intended to provide relief to impacted traders while also inspiring hope for a more secure and resilient Kantamanto Market.
