Minister of Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, is taking steps to ensure that the betting tax will be removed during the 2025 budget reading.

According to a report by citinewsroom.com, the finance minister is engaging the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to scrap nuisance taxes, including the betting tax.

Other key taxes under consideration for removal include the Electronic Transfer Levy (E-Levy) and COVID-19 levy.

Ongoing discussions aim to ensure that scrapping these taxes will not negatively impact Ghana’s program with the IMF for financial aid.

This development is welcome news for sports bettors, who were enthusiastic about President John Dramani Mahama‘s promise to scrap the betting tax if he won the 2024 general elections.

During his ministerial vetting, Dr. Forson stressed that removing the betting tax would be one of his first acts in office as it will not affect the economy.

It is expected that the betting tax will be abolished during the budget reading in March 2025, allowing bettors to earn their income without deductions.
