The Data Protection Commission (DPC) has started investigations into issues surrounding access to patient data managed by LightWave eHealthCare Solutions under a past contract with the Ministry of Health.

The contract involved the rollout of the National Electronic Medical Records and Patient Management System.

According to the Commission, the probe aims to establish how patient information has been accessed, stored, and managed, and whether such activities comply with the Data Protection Act, 2012 (Act 843).

The investigation is being carried out under the supervision of the Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, the Cyber Security Authority, and the National Information Technology Agency.

The DPC stated that the inquiry will review the management of the affected data, assess compliance with lawful processing and data security standards, and ensure that the rights of individuals whose data is involved are protected.

It added that all relevant parties, including LightWave eHealthCare Solutions and associated service partners, will be engaged to ensure transparency and efficiency in the process.

The Commission assured the public that the investigation would be fair and follow due process.

It reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding personal data, particularly sensitive health information, and to maintaining public trust in Ghana’s growing digital space.
