Great-grandfathers of the Asantehene (L) and the Dormaahene went to war over a Golden Stool
Historian Anokye Frimpong has given a historical antecedent which, perhaps, explains the Dormaahene, Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyeman Badu II’s recent remarks on the Golden Stool of Asanteman – the Sika Dwa Kofi.
At a recent public engagement, Osagyefo Agyeman Badu II said that the Golden Stool was wielded and not conjured from the sky, as documented in the history books.
But Anokye Frimpong, in an interview with Agyenkwa FM, asserted that the Sika Dwa Kofi was conjured, while going ahead to provide a history of how the Asantes went to war with the people of Dormaa over a replica Golden Stool.
He said that the chief of the people of Dormaa, Kodi Adu, who is the great-grandfather of Osagyefo Agyeman Badu II, manufactured a Golden Stool for his people, which bore a resemblance to that of the Asantes.
However, the Golden Stool of Dormaa, which he said was artificial, was seized and destroyed by the Asantes.
After Kodi Adu manufactured that ‘replica’ Golden Stool, the then Asantehene, Opoku Ware I – the second ruler of Asanteman – waged war against Dormaa to seize the stool.
“Under Opoku I, the Asantes went to war against the people of Dormaa, who were led by Nana Kofi Adu. The Asantes defeated them and took away their Golden Stool,” he said.
Why Dormaahene launched a new ‘attack’ on the Asantehene
The historian pointed out that the Asantes did not want any tribe to have a Golden Stool like theirs because of a warning given to them by the Great Okomfo Anokye, who conjured the Sika Dwa Kofi.
He said that Okomfo Anokye declared that there must be only one Golden Stool and that any stool resembling it must be destroyed.
“… because Okomfo Anokye had warned that there must be only one Golden Stool and that if anyone found another, the Asantes should go to war and conquer it.
“The Asantes defeated Dormaa and took possession of their Golden Stool, melted it, and it became the first Golden Stool melted by the Asantes in history,” he said.
