The Minority in Parliament has raised concerns about the shift in stance of the energy minister nominee, John Abdulai Jinapor, on private sector participation in the activities of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), as reported by citinewsroom.com.

According to the Minority, there has been a dramatic shift in the position of the Minister of Energy-designate.

“The nominee’s position on private sector participation in the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has also shifted dramatically,” they stated.

According to the report, the Minority raised these concerns during a press briefing on Wednesday, January 15, 2025.

The Minority further pointed out inconsistencies in John Jinapor’s approach to managing ECG, a critical body company in the energy sector.

According to the Minority, the nominee previously opposed private sector involvement, arguing on September 18, 2024, that it would worsen challenges at the ECG and increase political interference.

However, John Jinapor recently endorsed private sector participation in metering and revenue collection, showing a contrast in his decision.

“On September 18, 2024, he suggested that private sector involvement was detrimental to ECG, citing the need to reduce political interference. Yet, by January 7, 2025, he had reversed his stance, advocating for private sector participation in metering and collection. He claims to have remained consistent, but the evidence suggests otherwise. Does the nominee want to introduce ‘Goro Boys’ into ECG activities?” they questioned.

The Minority further called on Ghanaians to critically assess John Jinapor’s responses, emphasising the need for transparency and accountability in decisions that impact the nation’s energy future.

“We urge the public to reflect deeply on the implications of these responses. The role of the Minister of Energy is pivotal for our nation’s future, and we must demand accountability, transparency, and a commitment to the welfare of all citizens. Let us not overlook the substance of these answers as we consider the path forward for our energy sector,” they urged.
