Ghanaian brand consultant Bernard Kafui Sokpe has responded to recent comments made by Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, regarding the popular festive phrase “Detty December.”

Speaking during Labour Day celebrations in the United States, Speaker Bagbin raised concerns about the term, stating that “Detty December” promotes the use of drugs and tarnishes Ghana’s international image.

However, in an interview with GhanaWeb’s Isaac Dadzie, Bernard Kafui Sokpe refuted these claims.

He explained that Detty December is not associated with the promotion of drugs as speculated.

“I don’t believe that, I think it is about enjoyment and it is completely away from what happens in December and it should not be associated with drugs… I think it is unfond and we need to sit at the drawing board and find ways in which Detty December can promote the Black Star Experience,” he said.

When asked whether Nigerians are now leading the “Detty December” trend, Sokpe acknowledged their growing presence but maintained that Ghana remains central to the movement.

“Nigerians are louder than us and they have a bigger population than us, so when they speak they are louder than us and it is definitely going to look like that but it is not really like that,” he added.

“Detty December,” widely recognised as a season of festive events, concerts, and cultural experiences, has become a major part of Ghana’s holiday calendar, attracting tourists and creatives from around the world.
