A police officer previously sacked and reinstated has now been barred for life after texting a junior female colleague to suggest they meet for sex on a beach.

Detective Sergeant Sebastian Day, 39, was kicked out of Sussex Police for gross misconduct in 2012 after allegedly kicking a man in the head in Brighton during an arrest.

But he was cleared of assault by a court and reinstated as an officer after appealing to the Home Office. On Monday he appeared before a disciplinary panel for a second time after he sent a series of sexually lurid texts to a junior colleague.

He has now been forced to resign after admitting gross misconduct and told he can never rejoin the force.

Arranging to attend a leaving party on April 23, 2021, DS Day approached his colleague – Female A – and said: ‘We could stay in a hotel, but only for a couple of hours as we both have someone to go home to.’

DS Day, who was her supervisor, later sent a message saying he was going to suggest they stay at The Grand, a hotel on Brighton seafront.

He texted: ‘I was going to say The Grand but I got married there. Or the back of an Uber if it’s really classy.’

He then texted saying maybe she could ‘meet me on the seafront on the way home’.

Female A, who had responded to some texts, called him a ‘cheeky git’ and tried to end the text chat.

In a statement to the hearing she said she felt ‘uncomfortable’ with the way the texts had got out of hand.

Barring the former detective from serving again, panel chairman Arwel Jones said his behaviour could be seen as ‘harassing and offensive’.
