The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, has urged residents to desist from attacking police officers on duty and rather, extend their full cooperation to help maintain law and peaceful environment for all.‎‎

The minister’s appeal follows a confrontation that erupted between suspected illegal miners and police officers engaged in routine duties at Bepotenten, near Jacobu in the Amansie Central District of the Ashanti Region, on January 23, 2026.‎‎

The incident, which resulted in one fatality and numerous injuries, has sparked significant public discussions and concern over the fight against illegal mining in the Ashanti Region.‎‎

Dr Amoakohene, in a statement issued in Kumasi, described the incident as regrettable and preventable.

He urged citizens to adhere to lawful directives, emphasising that, under no circumstances should individuals confront the police or partake in actions that jeopardised public safety.‎‎

The minister extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and expressed sympathy for all those affected by this tragic event.‎‎

Dr Amoakohene, however, commended the Ghana Police Service for their unwavering commitment to maintaining law and order.‎‎

Moreover, he reiterated the government’s steadfast commitment to supporting the Police and all security agencies in the execution of their lawful duties to safeguard lives, property, and public peace.‎‎

Investigations are currently underway, and those found to have acted unlawfully will be held accountable, he stated.‎‎

He also urged community leaders and stakeholders to collaborate in efforts to restore calm and order.‎‎ GNA
