A police sergeant in Ghana, David Ojeyim, has leveled severe allegations against Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno. In a written testimony given to the High Court, Sgt Ojeyim stated that the DIGP directed him and eleven other officers to disregard official police orders.

Sgt Ojeyim, who works for the Police Intelligence Directorate (PID), filed a case seeking a Judicial Review after refusing to comply with a transfer order. He added that on October 2, 2024, he and his crew informed DIGP Yohuno of their transfer signal. Yohuno, he claims, told them not to follow this instruction since it was doubtful and unwarranted. The sergeant also noted that they were instructed to record their judgment in the station diary, which they did.

The officers were purportedly recruited for “Operation D-Day,” an intelligence collecting program spearheaded by ASP Alhaji Jalil Bawa of the Motor Transport and Traffic Directorate (MTTD). Sgt Ojeyim stated that, while ASP Bawa did not have the authorization to recruit PID officers, they followed his instructions because they felt they were operating on DIGP Yohuno’s directives.

These charges have raised serious concerns regarding discipline within the Ghana Police Service. Sgt Ojeyim explained that defying orders in a police force is considered mutiny, one of the most serious offenses. He said that the assertion that a senior official, such as the DIGP, instructs lower officers to disregard instructions suggests major issues with discipline and authority within the police force. He stated that if those in command are unable to retain control over their subordinates, it could lead to serious problems in law enforcement.

Sgt Ojeyim and his colleagues have been suspended pending the outcome of an internal investigation into their reluctance to comply with the transfer order. However, he stated that because of the Judicial Review lawsuit that has been filed at the High Court, all disciplinary actions against them will be stayed until the court makes a decision.

The conclusion of this case could have serious consequences for Deputy IGP Christian Yohuno and influence perceptions of authority within the Ghana Police Service. As these charges are investigated in court, many observers will be watching intently to see how the scenario plays out and what it means for future police operations.
