The Director of Communications of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has called on President John Dramani Mahama to take bold, decisive action against illegal mining widely known as galamsey, warning that failure to do so will make him the “chief promoter” of the menace.
According to Ahiagbah, Ghana’s survival is at stake as forests and rivers come under severe threat from illegal mining. He said only firm leadership can salvage the situation.

“Respectfully, Mr President, deploying soldiers to 44 hotspots is woefully insufficient. Without a state of emergency, the military will be constrained,” he cautioned.
Ahiagbah accused the government of fueling galamsey through the Gold Board’s gold-purchasing program, which he claimed provides a ready market for illegally mined gold.
“Instead of buying illegal gold, your government should confiscate and arrest the galamseyers at the point of sale. Anything short of this makes you the chief promoter,” he charged.
Ahiagbah urged President Mahama to punish NDC operatives engaged in galamsey, whose proximity to power emboldens them, end all government dealings with illegal miners, empower the military through a state of emergency declaration and direct the Attorney-General to televise galamsey trials to expose financiers and accomplices.

Ahiagbah stressed that the president has a historic opportunity to secure Ghana’s environment for future generations.
“Mr President, you have an excellent opportunity to impact Ghana in ways history will never forget. Please act decisively and end the galamsey menace,” he emphasized.
