Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim

The Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, has issued a stern warning to District Chief Executives (DCEs) who withhold or divert funds meant for Assembly Members and Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), stating that such misconduct will lead to their immediate dismissal.

Speaking in an interview on Accra-based Neat FM’s morning show hosted by Mac-Jerry Osei Agyemang on Friday, July 24, 2025, the minister stressed that the allowances are strictly meant for elected Assembly Members, government appointees, and PWDs—not for the Assemblies or their administrators.

“Woe betide any DCE who tampers with these funds in collaboration with District Finance Officers (DFOs),” Ahmed Ibrahim warned.

“President John Mahama will not hesitate to sack any DCE found culpable.”

He also cautioned DFOs to stay clear of any financial misconduct, stating that the Ministry will not tolerate such behaviour.

The minister emphasised that the funds have already been released to the Assemblies and urged Assembly Members to visit their respective finance departments to make enquiries.

“The President understands the importance of local governance and is committed to supporting Assembly Members in their work.

That is why the funds have been disbursed to support their welfare and that of PWDs,” he added.

According to the minister, the allowances cover over 6,000 elected Assembly Members and more than 2,000 government appointees nationwide.

He stressed that the distribution is non-discriminatory and cuts across all political affiliations.

“This is an exclusive fund for the welfare of Assembly Members and PWDs.

There will be no discrimination based on political colouration,” he assured.

To ensure compliance, Ahmed Ibrahim announced that the Ministry will begin a nationwide monitoring exercise next week to verify that the funds are being used for their intended purpose.

He concluded by reiterating the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government’s commitment to making the payment of Assembly Members’ and PWDs’ allowances a top priority.
