Public outrage continues to trail the MASLOC corruption case as convicted former Chief Operating Officer Daniel Axim has been released from prison on bail pending appeal.

Axim, who was found guilty on 78 criminal counts including willfully causing financial loss to the Republic, is serving a five-year sentence handed down by the Financial and Economic Division of the High Court in April 2024.

His co-accused, former MASLOC Chief Executive Officer Sedina Christine Tamakloe-Attionu, was convicted in absentia and sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment after evading trial and leaving the jurisdiction.

Despite the gravity of the offences, the Supreme Court on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, granted Axim bail following prolonged delays in the hearing of his appeal.

The application for bail was filed by his lawyers, led by Augustine Obour, who argued that the appeal process had stalled for over a year while their client had already served nearly two years of his sentence.

Presiding Justice Amadu Tanko, together with Justices Samuel Asiedu, Senyo Dzamefe, Philip Bright Mensah, and Kweku Tawiah Ackaah-Boafo, admitted Axim to bail in the sum of GH¢500,000.

Under the bail conditions, Axim must provide two sureties, one justified with a landed property valued at the bail amount and verified by a land surveyor. He is also required to deposit his passport with the court and report to the Registrar of the Supreme Court every two weeks.

The Registrar has been directed to document his reporting schedule and issue a certificate if he defaults for three consecutive weeks.

The State, represented by Chief State Attorney Winifred Sarpong and Principal State Attorney Hilda Craig, opposed the application but was unsuccessful.

The Supreme Court further ordered the transmission of all trial records from the High Court to the Court of Appeal within one month to facilitate the long-delayed appeal.

The development has reignited public debate over accountability in high-profile corruption cases involving public officials, particularly within state institutions entrusted with managing public funds.
