Media personality and entertainment commentator Nana Frimpong Ziega has argued that Ghanaian universities should formally study the works of the late highlife legend Daddy Lumba, describing him as a “musical genius” whose contributions are unmatched.
Speaking live on Neat FM on September 4, 2025, Ziega recalled the longstanding debates comparing Daddy Lumba with other major artistes. He noted how Lumba has been compared to artistes like Kojo Antwi, Nana Acheampong and even Michael Jackson.
“I even remember being beaten till I was unconscious during an argument. People also argued between Lumba and Kojo Antwi on who was better. And now, people are comparing him to Michael Jackson,” he noted.
Ziega also shared how he and others used to sell video CDs after high school, recounting that whenever a Daddy Lumba release dropped, they’d borrow funds to buy in bulk because demand was so high.
“We used to have a system where we would buy a few CDs, sell them, and you would buy extra from the profits. But anytime a Daddy Lumba album was about to be released, we had to borrow so we could buy in bulk, because they were in such high demand,” he added.
He lamented how Ghana has failed to properly honor Lumba’s legacy, noting how in the United States, global stars like Beyoncé are studied in academic settings.
“In the United States, Beyoncé is being studied. Why can’t we do the same for Lumba? His lyrical genius shows he is someone who should be studied. His style of music and his lyrics should be studied. He is the greatest in Africa in terms of music composition and lyrical content,” he urged.
