MP for Gomoa Central, Kwame A Plus MP for Gomoa Central, Kwame A Plus

Gomoa Central Member of Parliament, Kwame Asare Obeng popularly known as A Plus has waded into the ongoing debate over the policy in public schools in Ghana requiring Senior High School students to cut their hairs before enrollment.

According to him, private schools such as Ghana International School (GIS) pose as alternate options to parents who disagree with such policies.

In a post on his Facebook page on October 29, 2025, A Plus posted, “Don’t cut your kids’ hair. That nonsense must stop. Take your kids to GIS. You can’t pay GIS? Cut the ‘nonsense’ hair and go for free!”

The debate reignited following viral videos of students being forced to trim their hairs against their will just to gain admission into schools.

While some education stakeholders maintain that hair does not influence academic performance, others, including A-Plus, have defended the schools’ right to enforce the rule as part of school discipline standards.

Recently, the Minister of Education, Haruna Idirisu, speaking at the 75th anniversary of Mawuli Senior High School, declared that the Ministry of Education will not tolerate long hair in senior high schools.

He warned that allowing long hair today could lead to schools losing control over other aspects of students’ appearance and empowered headmasters and the Ghana Education Service (GES) to enforce rules on student behaviour, grooming, and discipline on campus.
