A Professor of Finance at the University of Ghana Business School, Professor Godfred Alufar Bokpin, has called for a shift in Ghana’s culture of “title worship” to a focus on productivity and performance.

Speaking on the JoyNews’ Newsfile on August 23, Professor Bokpin argued that while the misuse of academic and honorary titles needs to be addressed, the country must place a higher value on tangible results.

“As a country, we should move beyond that. We should be driven by productivity, by performance, that should be our consideration rather than we seem to worship titles and parade all these things,” he said.

Strengthening GTEC’s Mandate: A call for lawful and impartial regulation

He challenged individuals to justify their titles by asking, “What have you done? What is the transformation? What is the productivity?”

Professor Bokpin also challenged those who have earned their titles legitimately to ensure their qualifications translate into a positive impact on teaching, research, and society.

EXPLAINER: Understanding the mandate of GTEC

“Even those who have acquired it genuinely and through the hard work, how are we using it to impact society? How is it reflecting in how we engage students, teaching and the rest?” he questioned.

While he supports Ghana Tertiary Education Commission’s (GTEC) regulation to “sanitise the sector,” he believes it must be accompanied by clear guidelines and education on the proper use of titles.
