Court sentences Christopher Sorkpa to 5 years for destroying 5 cars in Parliamen

An Accra Circuit court has sentenced 33-year-old Christopher Kofi Okyere Sorkpa for damaging vehicles belonging to Members and staff of Parliament.

On Wednesday, December 18, Christopher and Wisdom, both alleged preachers of the gospel residing in Kasoa sneaked into Parliament House Car Park. 1 holding a handbag with earth chisel concealed in it.

The prosecution charged the first accused (Christopher Okyere Sorkpa) with six counts of offenses including conspiracy to commit unlawful damage and unlawful damage.

Per the prosecution’s account, he removed the tool and smashed the windscreens of two Toyota V8 SUVs, two Toyota Camry Saloon Cars and one Rav 4 SUV.

The vehicles belonged to Members of Parliament of Fanteakwa South, Kwaku Okyere Agyekum, and Subin, Eugene Boakye Antwi, and three Parliamentary staff, Jessica Mensah, Sena Atsu and Gifty Gbah.

The second accused, 42-year-old Wisdom Ahli, the prosecution noted was praising Christopher for causing damages to the vehicles.

They were both picked up by Parliamentary police personnel after which their caution statement was taken in the presence of an independent witness.

In court on Friday, December 20, Christopher pleaded guilty to all the charges levelled against him and was convicted on his own plea.

Presiding judge Samuel Bright Asiedu sentenced Christopher to three years on count 1(conspiracy to cause unlawful damage). On counts 2-6 however, he was sentenced to 5 years on each count, with the sentences to run concurrently.

Wisdom Ahli was remanded into police custody by the court. The Prosecution noted that after going through the charges, it was realised that his charges were defective.

The prosecutor, Supt Augustine Yirenkye therefore prayed for adjournment so they could amend the charges.

The case has since been adjourned to January 9, 2025 for the charges of the second accused to be amended.
