Veteran sports journalist Patrick Osei Agyemang, popularly known as Countryman Songo has launched a scathing critique of Dr. Randy Abbey following his recent appointment as Chairman of the Black Stars Management Committee.

Known for his bold and unfiltered opinions, Songo questioned Dr Abbey’s credentials and suitability for the role.

This criticism comes after Dr. Abbey, a former host of Good Morning Ghana on Metro TV, was named Chairman of the newly formed Black Stars Management Committee.

He is joined on the committee by former Black Stars captain Stephen Appiah and Moses Armah, Samuel Aboabire, and Richard Nsenkyire.

Speaking with his characteristic passion on his Fire for Fire show, Songo acknowledged Dr. Abbey’s expertise but expressed doubts about his ability to bring success to Ghana football.

He referenced Dr. Abbey’s past management roles, which he described as underwhelming, and argued that these made him an unsuitable candidate for the position.

“Randy Abbey’s intelligence and knowledge of sports are undeniable, but does that necessarily make him the only viable candidate for the job? His tenure alongside Kwasi Nyantakyi was marked by a lack of trophies, and his reappointment has yielded similar results,” Songo asserted.

The outspoken journalist also criticized Dr. Abbey’s involvement in key decision-making processes during Ghana’s recent football campaigns, which ended in disappointment.

“Abbey was part of the committee that oversaw Ghana’s disastrous performance at the 2021 AFCON in Cameroon, where he played a significant role in the appointment of head coach Milovan Rajevac. He was also part of the management committee during the 2022 World Cup and the 2023 AFCON in Côte d’Ivoire, both of which ended in failure,” Songo said.

Songo further called for fresh leadership in Ghana football, arguing that new perspectives and ideas are needed to reverse the team’s declining fortunes.

“With things only getting worse despite his long tenure, perhaps it’s time to consider alternative candidates who can inject fresh perspectives and ideas into the team,” he added.
