In a stunning change of events, Ghana’s Commissioner of Police (COP) Nathaniel Kofi Boakye has reportedly expressed opposition to George Akuffo Dampare’s prolonged stay as Inspector General of Police (IGP). This information was revealed by Paul Adom Otchere, host of Good Evening Ghana, in a post on his verified Facebook page.

According to 3News, George Akuffo Dampare, who took over as acting IGP on August 1, 2021, following James Oppong-Boanuh’s retirement, was officially appointed IGP in October 2021. Dampare has been commended since taking office for his reformist leadership, which has enhanced professionalism in the Ghana Police Service, establishing it as one of the country’s most efficient institutions.

Dampare’s administration has received special praise for ensuring peace and order throughout the tumultuous 2024 general elections. His stance to law enforcement has received widespread approval, with many asking for his continued involvement under President John Dramani Mahama.

However, recent reports indicate that COP Boakye, who has enormous power within the police force, is opposed to Dampare’s retention as IGP. While it was thought that Boakye would support Dampare’s leadership, insiders say he has expressed a desire for a change at the top. This has sparked speculation regarding Dampare’s tenure.

Otchere’s Facebook post increased to the intrigue by implying that COP Boakye may have the ultimate word on the situation, though he has allegedly dismissed the idea of Dampare remaining in the position. This internal conflict has fueled debate over the leadership of the Ghana Police Service.

As the argument over the force’s leadership continues, many people want to know why Boakye is opposed. It remains to be seen whether this internal criticism will result in a leadership change or if Dampare will continue to promote police reforms. The coming days are expected to bring clarity as the nation keenly observes the issue.

For the time being, the IGP’s future is questionable, since political and security issues continue to shift ahead of the new administration.
