Some concerned referees and match commissioners have announced a boycott of the Ghana Premier League following 21 weeks of unpaid salaries.

In a letter addressed to the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and dated April 27, 2025, the aggrieved group stated that they would not resume their duties until the outstanding payments were made.

They warned that the situation could expose officials to compromise if they were offered large financial incentives during the course of their duties.

“We write, anonymously, to notify you of our decision to boycott the remainder of the Ghana Premier League games with immediate effect. This difficult decision has been taken unequivocally due to our unpaid allowances for 21 weeks, and we do not intend to return until all our outstanding debts are paid.

“We wish to remind the authorities that leaving referees’ and match commissioners’ allowances unpaid is ample ground for inducement, which we all vehemently abhor and wish to avoid at all costs to maintain the integrity of the game,” portions of the statement read.

The concerned referees and match commissioners urged the authorities to settle the arrears as soon as possible to avoid disrupting the Ghana Premier League.

“It is our considered view, and we hope that you will treat this notice with all the urgency and seriousness it deserves. We wish to conclude with an 18th-century adage that lucidly states, ‘An empty sack cannot stand upright,'” the statement added.

Meanwhile, the GFA has yet to respond to the statement and address the concerns raised.
