World-class mixed martial arts action was once again on full display at CareFirst Arena tonight as PFL Washington D.C. delivered an unforgettable evening of fights.
In the main event, #C-Thad “The Silverback” Jean (12-0) captured the PFL Welterweight Championship following a third-round TKO win over #8-Ernesto “Starboy” Rodriguez (11-2). In a back-and-forth battle, Jean overcame adversity as he was dropped to the canvas and had to dig deep against Rodriguez, who surprised everyone except himself in a performance that saw the Cuban moments away from gold. “Starboy” turned the fight into a scrap, closing the distance and throwing big. But in the end, Jean’s power was too much in the third round as he flattened out his opponent and started raining down strikes until the referee stopped the fight, crowning “The Silverback” with gold in the nation’s capital.
The co-main event was a brutal display from Brazil’s #10-Rafael “Kratos” Xavier (15-9), who finished #8-Tyson Pedro (10-7) with a series of headkicks, and followed him to the ground with a flurry of elbows that cut open the Australian and led to the referee stepping in to stop the fight in the last seconds of the first round. Xavier showcased an array of strikes to the awe of the Washington crowd, and will have earned himself a higher spot in the updated light heavyweight rankings next week.
In a fight that many fans are saying stole the show, #7-Rasul Magomedov (10-0) defeated #4-Sullivan “Sully” Cauley (8-3) in an incredible display of grit and heart as the pair exchanged heavy blows throughout the three rounds, with both hitting the canvas in the bout. Going to the judge’s scorecards, the Bahraini got the nod as the damage he inflicted on the American proved to be the deciding factor, who suffered a nasty cut from Magomedov’s onslaught.
And in the main card opener, PFL Africa alumni Eliezer “King Kong” Kubanza (9-1) put on a masterful performance as he choked out #9-Chris “Cossack” Mixan (7-3) in the second round. Kubanza was threatening from the opening bell with ill intent, throwing dangerous strikes that overwhelmed Mixan. In round two, “King Kong” showcased a complete mixed martial arts game as he locked in a D’arce choke that forced Mixan to submit.
