Company law, legal drafting should be taught at LLB level-Dafeamekpor proposes

Member of Parliament for South Dayi, Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor, has called for reforms in Ghana’s legal education, urging that key subjects such as company law, taxation, and legal drafting be taught at the Bachelor of Laws level.

He argued that strengthening the academic foundation of law students would better prepare them for professional training.

Sharing his views on the structure of legal studies, he explained that subjects like company law can be effectively handled at the LLB stage, while the practical aspects can be reserved for professional training.

He emphasized that legal drafting is central to a lawyer’s competence and should be made a foundational course at the undergraduate level. In his view, advocacy should also be introduced earlier, noting that activities such as moot court exercises are closely linked to advocacy skills.

He further indicated that other courses, including evidence and interpretation of laws, can be taught at both the LLB and professional levels.

He maintained that introducing these subjects during undergraduate studies would provide students with a stronger academic base and improve the overall quality of legal training in Ghana.
