Sydney commuters have had to evacuate from trains after a self-harm incident on a busy platform.

NSW Police have said emergency service staff attended an urgent incident at Central Station at about 4:40pm on Thursday.

The condition of the individual involved remains unknown.

Transport for NSW has told passengers to allow extra travel time, with stops and platforms expected to change for some services.

People have been told to listen for announcements and check transport apps before travelling.

A commuter has said they were ‘stuck for an unknown amount of time’ on their train on which an announcement said: ‘We will get through this together’.

Another passenger said trains are not moving at the station and a conductor on a speaker said people will be ‘stranded for a while’.

‘We’ve been asked to evacuate through the front carriage via a driver’s door,’ they said.

Sydney Trains has said routes have been impacted on the T1 North Shore and Western Line, T2 Leppington and Inner West Line, T3 Liverpool and Inner West Line, T6 Lidcombe and Bankstown Line and T8 Airport and South Line.

    More to come.
