Henry Asante Twum, Communications Director for the Ghana Football Association (GFA), has clarified that the clubs that received buses under the GFA’s Bus Acquisition Strategy were duly informed that the buses were not brand new.

On Wednesday, November 20, 2024, the GFA President, as part of the association’s commitment to supporting teams in the Ghana Premier League and Division One League, distributed buses to the top three clubs in each of the 2023/24 Division One League’s three zones.

The beneficiary clubs included New Edubiase United FC, Okwawu United FC, Young Apostles FC, Techiman Heroes FC, Cape Coast Ebusua Dwarfs FC, Basake Holy Stars FC, Vision FC, Hohoe United FC, and Victory Club Warriors FC.

However, the initiative sparked backlash when videos surfaced showing worn-out parts and interiors of the buses after the handover ceremony.

The GFA faced criticism for distributing ‘old’ buses to the teams.

In an interview with Accra-based Joy FM, Asante-Twum explained that the clubs were aware of the state of the buses but emphasised that it was never the GFA’s intention to provide buses in poor condition.

“Clubs were aware the buses were not brand new. I think the problem was with the condition. It is unfortunate that some of the clubs received buses that were not in good condition. It was never the intention of the GFA to provide buses that would cause problems for the clubs instead of assisting them,” he clarified.

The GFA has since announced plans to extend the initiative to the Women’s Premier League, with four clubs set to receive buses in the coming days.
