Chairperson of the Constitutional Review Committee, Clara Kowlaga Beeri Kasser-Tee Chairperson of the Constitutional Review Committee, Clara Kowlaga Beeri Kasser-Tee

The Chairperson of the Constitutional Review Committee, Clara Kowlaga Beeri Kasser-Tee, has condemned the Electoral Commission of Ghana for its inconsistencies in addressing disputed election results.

She asserts that these inconsistencies weaken public trust and pave the way for dissatisfaction.

“If you say this is the only circumstance under which we do re-collation, but in another instance, you act differently and fail to demonstrate the distinction, you create room for people to be dissatisfied,” she said during an interview on News File on Joy News.

Her comments followed the Supreme Court decision that quashed the re-collation of votes from Tema Central, Ablekuma North, Techiman South, and Okaikwei Central in the 2024 parliamentary elections.

The apex court also stated that the order did not affect the results for Ahafo Ano North and Nsawam Adoagyiri.

Kasser-Tee emphasised the critical role of consistency and transparency in maintaining public confidence in electoral processes.

“For me, it’s the procedure that is important. When there is clarity and consistency in the process, disputes often don’t even arise.”

“I was curious why the EC didn’t oppose these allegations in court. If you are amenable to doing what you are supposed to do, why not demonstrate it?” she questioned, suggesting that the Commission’s failure to act in line with established procedures raised doubts about its transparency.

Kasser-Tee highlighted the responsibility of the Electoral Commission, saying, “The EC must demonstrate clearly that its actions are grounded in law and fairness. Anything less invites unnecessary dissatisfaction.”

She underscored the critical role of an inclusive and impartial system in encouraging public trust.

“When you treat everybody fairly and give everyone an opportunity to be heard, they may not always be happy with your decision, but they will respect it,” she stated.
