Ahead of the 2028 electioneering year, conversations around potential candidates for both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have been gaining momentum.
For the NDC, figures like Chief of Staff Julius Debrah have been tipped as strong contenders for the party’s presidential ticket in the 2028 elections.
One name gaining traction in political circles as a potential running mate is businessman and philanthropist Ibrahim Mahama.
According to a report by Citizen Eye Ghana, a Debrah–Mahama ticket could be not only politically formidable but also transformative for Ghana’s development.
“Debrah has given his entire political life to the NDC with an untarnished record of loyalty, while Ibrahim Mahama has used his wealth to uplift society rather than divide it. Imagine what they can achieve together,” the report stated.

The report also highlights Ibrahim Mahama’s growing reputation as one of Ghana’s most impactful philanthropists, widely known for his business success. Mahama’s charitable work often flies under the radar, driven more by compassion than politics or publicity.
Julius Debrah, on the other hand, brings decades of political experience deeply rooted in the NDC. He has served under the late President Rawlings and continued through to President Mahama, with his role as Chief of Staff marking a long-standing dedication to the party.
“Julius Debrah has remained steadfast through every chapter of the NDC’s journey. He has no blemish, no scandal, and a consistent record of service,” the report added.
Citizen Eye Ghana believes the potential pairing of Debrah and Mahama presents a strong opportunity for the NDC to move forward in unity.

“The country is yearning for leaders who are both capable and compassionate. Debrah and Mahama represent exactly that — a combination of political discipline and human-centered leadership,” it concluded.
The suggestion comes as political parties across Ghana evaluate leadership options following recent electoral outcomes. Opposition parties, in particular, focus on combinations that could appeal to diverse voter constituencies while maintaining party unity.
