The Director General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service, COP Lydia Yaako Donkor, has been officially sworn in as a member of the Governing Board of the National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons (NACSA).

The brief but significant ceremony took place at the Commission’s headquarters in Accra.

COP Donkor brings to the board a wealth of experience in policing, legal practice, and human rights advocacy.

Her experience and legal expertise spans counter-terrorism, human trafficking, money laundering and elections security.

Her appointment is expected to further strengthen the Commission’s capacity to address the complex and evolving threats posed by the illicit proliferation of small arms and light weapons in Ghana.

She joins 14 other Board members with diverse expertise spanning security, law, governance and development.

Together, the reconstituted board is well-positioned to offer strategic guidance and policy oversight as the Commission intensifies its efforts to promote peace and security across the country.

During the ceremony, COP Donkor expressed her unwavering support for the passage of the proposed National Arms Bill into law, noting that it would significantly aid the Ghana Police Service in effectively enforcing the law.

The current Governing Board of NACSA includes:

Godwin Animli Dorgbadzi-Dorani (MP) – Chairman

Dr Adam Alhassan Adamu Bonaa (Executive Secretary) – NACSA

COP Lydia Yaako Donkor (Director-General, CID) – Ghana Police Service

Dr Mohammed Kamil Mohammed (Member) – President’s Nominee

Dr Elvis Koka Abima (PhD) – Lecturer KNUST/President’s Nominee

ACOP Al-Meyao Abass Kwarasey (Director, Operations) – Ghana Police Service

Dr Mohammed Bako (Principal Analyst) – National Security Council Secretariat

Eric Kwaku Bonney (Asst. Commissioner, Preventive) – Customs Division, GRA

Laud Kwasi Ofori Affrifah (Deputy Comptroller General, Operations) – GIS

Cpt (GN) Michael Larbi (Military Assistant to Minister) – Ghana Armed Forces

Col Dominic Ampomah (Director, Operational Intelligence) – Ghana Armed Forces

Ms Gloria McCarthy (Director, Human Resource) – Ministry of the Interior

Mrs Khalilah Hackman (Deputy Director, Legal) – Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Reg. Integration

Mrs Sefakor Batse (Chief State Attorney) – Office of the AG & Minister for Justice

    Francis Ameyibor – CSOs Representative

Together, they form a multidisciplinary team equipped to guide the Commission’s policy direction and oversight.

The swearing-in, which was done during the first meeting of the newly constituted board, comes at a crucial time, following a two-day stakeholder meeting to review the proposed National Arms Bill, a legal framework which aims to strengthen arms control mechanisms in the country.

The convergence of these events underscores the Commission’s ongoing commitment to ensuring an effective, robust, airtight and modern arms regulation which will promote a gun-violence-free, peaceful, safe and secure Ghana.
