Ghanaian media personality Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah has urged Christians worldwide not to allow Christendom to be perceived as a “weak link” in the face of global persecution, calling for a renewed spirit of courage and accountability.

He made this passionate call during the Christian Persecution Summit organized by the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC in the United States of America.

Speaking before a gathering of global leaders, policymakers and human rights defenders, Okatakyie who doubles as the Chairman of the Generational Rights Protection Society (GRPS) delivered a stirring message centered on faith, freedom and justice.

He emphasised that throughout human history, the church has always stood resilient in the face of oppression and must continue to do so.

“Christendom should not be positioned to be some sort of a weak link,” Okatakyie stated.

“Those who persecute Christians must not think they have a monopoly over violence. Governments, especially on the African continent, have a constitutional mandate to protect their people, including those who believe in their faith.”

Okatakyie called on African governments and the African Union to uphold their obligations under the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, which guarantees freedom of worship.

He further urged the United States and other international bodies to press African governments to take concrete action against religious persecution.

Okatakyie drew a critical link between religious persecution and the erosion of democracy, warning that societies where the church is silenced often experience democratic decay.

“The persecution of the church is equally an existential threat to democracy, wherever the church has been weakened, democracy does not thrive. All governments that believe in democracy must come to the defense of the Christian faith.”
