Former Ghana head coach Chris Hughton has reportedly become the frontrunner for the vacant Zimbabwe national team job.

The Warriors have been without a head coach since the dismissal of Michael Nees, who was relieved of his duties following a string of poor results.

Earlier this week, the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) officially announced the search for a new coach, inviting applications from interested candidates.

Despite the interest of high-profile names such as Stuart Baxter, Pitso Mosimane, and Kaitano Tembo, reports indicate that Hughton has formally applied for the role and is now leading the race among more than 300 applicants.

The 65-year-old tactician, who has previously managed Brighton & Hove Albion, Nottingham Forest, and Newcastle United, has been without a club since parting ways with Ghana in January 2024.

According to ZIFA president Nqobile Magwizi, the appointment process is nearing completion.

“The process of appointing a coach is at an advanced stage. I think by Monday or Tuesday next week, we should be in a position to make an announcement,” he told SuperSport’s Africa Sport.

Zimbabwe are set to face Algeria in Saudi Arabia on November 13, before hosting Qatar four days later.

The two international friendlies form part of the team’s preparations ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations, scheduled for December.
