The Commissioner of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), Joseph Whittal, has promised former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta protection should he return to Ghana.

According to the CHRAJ boss, Ofori-Atta’s rights will be safeguarded once he arrives in the country.

In an interview on January 23, 2026, Whittal urged him to return and account for his stewardship.

He assured that CHRAJ would intervene if Ofori-Atta faced any unfair treatment upon his return.

“Accountability is expected right from day one of your appointment. I wish to assure him that he should not worry; if his rights are violated, CHRAJ will speak for him. He must come home and speak to the period he managed this country,” myjoyonline.com quoted him as saying.

The Commissioner made these remarks when members of the pressure group Arise Ghana visited his office to seek support for their call for Ofori-Atta’s return.

He emphasised that “accountability for handling public resources is non-negotiable.”

EXPLAINER: How ongoing ‘Bring Back Ken’ protests could help Ofori-Atta remain in the US

Ken Ofori-Atta has been charged with corruption and corruption-related offences in connection with the Strategic Mobilisation Limited (SML) scandal.

The Government of Ghana has formally requested his extradition from the United States to face the charges.
