The Asante Youth Association (AYA), a group advocating for the development of Asanteman, has issued a challenge to the Mahama-led National Democratic Congress (NDC) government to choose between supporting the dignity of the Ashanti Kingdom or what they termed as endorsing the conduct of controversial broadcaster Kevin Taylor.

In a statement released on Tuesday July 29, 2025, AYA President Ronald Ofori accused the government of turning a blind eye to Kevin Taylor’s repeated verbal attacks on respected traditional leaders, particularly the Otumfuo’s linguist.

According to the group, Taylor’s behaviour has gone unchecked due to tacit approval from the NDC, which they claim signals disregard for the values and heritage of Asanteman.

“It is clear that the NDC prefers to stand with this ill-mannered Kevin Taylor who has insulted almost every significant figure in Ghana except the President and a few members of the NDC,” kessbenonline.com quoted Ofori to have said in the press statement.

The group also criticised the elevation of Dormaahene, Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyeman Badu II, from a High Court judge to the Court of Appeal.

AYA contends that the Dormaahene has persistently made derogatory remarks about Asanteman and its traditional leadership and has attempted to distort the historical narrative between the people of Dormaa and Ashanti.

“We are scandalized that someone who has consistently denigrated Asanteman is being rewarded with a higher judicial appointment by the NDC government,” Ofori said.

Dr Ofori further questioned the role of the judiciary, claiming it has become a tool for political manipulation.

He expressed frustration over the perceived leniency shown towards Kevin Taylor, who, despite facing charges for abusive conduct, was allegedly set free by court and even provided diplomatic protection by National Security operatives as alleged by some influential people in the country.

“Instead of being punished for his insults and misconduct, Kevin Taylor has been shielded by state institutions,” the AYA President claimed.

The group also raised alarms about the government’s security priorities. They pointed out that while violent incidents continue to escalate in areas like Nkwanta, Bawku, and Asawase, government resources are seemingly diverted to protect controversial individuals.

“Innocent Ghanaians are dying in conflict zones, yet the government seems more interested in securing persons of questionable character,” the statement read.

The Asante Youth Association urged the Mahama administration to take a clear stance, either align with the values of Asanteman or continue supporting individuals who insult and undermine its leadership.

“The time has come for the government to choose: Kumasi or Kevin Taylor,” the group declared.
