Member of Parliament for Chiana-Paga, Nikyema Billa Alamzy, has taken a playful swipe at former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan, reminding him of his infamous penalty miss against Uruguay in the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

The Black Stars were just one kick away from becoming the first African nation to reach the semi-finals of the World Cup after being awarded a last-minute penalty in extra time.

However, Gyan missed the penalty, sending the ball crashing into the crossbar and breaking the hearts of Ghanaians and Africans alike.

In a lighthearted jab, the MP, while acknowledging the Black Stars’ past glory during Parliamentary proceedings on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, recounted the infamous moment that shattered Ghana’s dreams.

“Ghana has always been so good. That was in 2010 when we went to the World Cup and qualified for the quarter-finals. We were just one penalty away from reaching the semi-finals. It was rather unfortunate that one of our players kicked the ball away. We’ve been told he’s a card-bearing member of our brothers from the other side,” he said, implying that Asamoah Gyan aligns with the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Bernard Ahiafor, however, cautioned Alamzy that his remarks could land him in trouble.

In response, Alamzy defended his statement, arguing that since Asamoah Gyan was part of the NPP’s campaign team, his comments were justified.

“It cannot generate any debate because he was the leading member of the sports side with the campaign team, so it cannot generate debate, it’s a fact,” he added.

The Black Stars went on to lose the penalty shootout and exited the tournament in South Africa.
