Following an interview on GHOne TV, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has become embroiled in controversy. Wontumi asserted that between 30 and 35 hospitals under the government’s Agenda 111 project had been finished in an interview with journalist Serwaa Amihere. Further uncertainty resulted from his remarks being ambiguous when he was asked for specifics.

Wontumi hesitated when Amihere asked him to give the locations of the finished hospitals, but he finally suggested that she “google” the details. Amihere reminded him that it was his duty to give truthful responses, highlighting his significant position within the NPP.

In response to mounting pressure, Wontumi later claimed that some of the hospitals were still being built, defying his earlier claim that the facilities were finished.

The government initiated the Agenda 111 project with the goal of building 111 district hospitals nationwide as a major effort to increase access to healthcare. The project’s advancement has been greeted with scepticism, though, since many have questioned whether the hospitals are actually being constructed or if there are delays and problems with transparency.

These worries have been heightened by Wontumi’s ambiguous remarks, in which detractors claim he is misrepresenting the facts.

Reactions on social media have been rife, with many people demanding greater accountability and proof of advancement. Wontumi’s comments have only increased public scepticism over the government’s main health initiative while the debate rages on.
