Entertainment critic Arnold Asamoah-Baidoo has criticised Kuami Eugene’s recent statement on catalogue sales, labelling it as ignorant.

In a recent interview on Asaasepa, Kuami Eugene dismissed the idea of ever selling his music catalogue, a practice that has become increasingly common among some Ghanaian artistes.

The singer argued that his songs hold huge commercial value, so there is no reason to part with them.

He further insisted that no level of financial difficulty could compel him to sell his catalogue, adding that “no kind of hunger” would ever make him take that step.

    However, Arnold has disagreed.

In an interview on Onua FM, he condemned the “hunger” comment, stating that selling a music catalogue is not a decision driven by hunger, as Kuami Eugene has implied.

“Kuami Eugene spoke out of ignorance. I watched the video, and his initial comment about ‘what kind of hunger would make him sell his catalog’ is misguided; you don’t need to be hungry to make that decision,” Arnold said.

He explained that artistes around the world sell catalogues for different reasons, mostly as a strategic business move, and not because they are broke.

Arnold also argued that Kuami Eugene does not even have the right to sell most of his songs, since he does not own them outright.

“It’s important to note that Kuami Eugene does not own most of his songs and, therefore, does not have the right to sell them. While he does have songwriting rights, the majority of his songs are under Lynx, which has now been sold to Richard Nii Amarh Quaye,” he added.
