A California hospital patient climbed into the ceiling of an emergency room and got stuck – leading police on wild rescue mission that was caught on tape.
Police in Upland responded to a call from San Antonio Regional Hospital at around 9pm Monday evening regarding a man who was ‘somewhere inside their ceiling.’
The adventurous patient had broken through ceiling tiles in one of the hospital’s bathrooms and hoisted himself up, police said.
The unidentified man, a walk-in patient believed to be under the influence of drugs, was ‘confirmed on surveillance footage going into the restroom and never coming out.’
Video footage released by police captured the responding officers climbing a ladder and sticking their heads through a hole in the ceiling in an attempt to locate the man.
Officers were initially unable to find him in the confined space, which was filled with wires, plumbing and HVAC lines, prompting them to utilize a pole camera to search for him.
The man was eventually discovered lying on his back, on top of an HVAC unit and stuck under a steel beam.
The footage showed the man attempting to move his arms, legs and head as responders tried to lead him out of the space.
An officer was seen grabbing the man’s feet, which were sticking out of the ceiling, and tugging on them before putting them on his shoulder and slowly guiding the man down to the floor.
The peculiar incident led to more than $5,000 worth of damages, landing the man in jail on charges of felony vandalism.
