The Confederation of African Football (CAF) have officially expanded the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) from 12 to 16 teams, beginning with the 2026 edition in Morocco, a landmark decision that underscores the rapid growth and inclusivity of women’s football on the continent.

The decision was ratified during the CAF Executive Committee (EXCO) meeting held in October in the Democratic Republic of Congo, with official confirmation sent to all member associations on November 3, 2025.

CAF’s decision, however, came after the qualification phase for the 2026 tournament had already been completed, forcing the governing body to extend invitations to four additional nations based on the FIFA Women’s World Rankings.

As a result, Cameroon (ranked 66th), Ivory Coast (71st), Mali (79th), and Egypt (95th) have been granted a new lease of life and will now join the 12 qualified nations for the historic 16-team competition.

This expansion marks another major milestone for African women’s football, following increased participation in CAF’s club competitions and record-breaking attendances in recent WAFCON editions.

The 2026 tournament in Morocco will not only feature the largest field in WAFCON history but will also provide a broader platform for emerging nations to showcase their talent, competitiveness, and commitment to the women’s game. It will take place from March 17 to April 3, 2026.
